Strengthening Community Voices: Formation of Natural Resource Watch Group Committees in Kasempa and Kalumbila

In the wake of a successful capacity-building workshop in Kasempa and Kalumbila, Future-Preneures Zambia has taken a significant step toward deepening community engagement in environmental stewardship and governance. With funding from ActionAid Zambia and support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), this initiative has now led to the formation of community-based Natural Resource Governance Committees, also known as Natural Resource Watch Groups, in each of the target districts.

The training empowered women and youths with critical knowledge and practical skills in Natural Resource Governance and Climate Justice. Through interactive discussions, expert presentations, and hands-on sessions, participants gained a deeper understanding of sustainable resource management, environmental monitoring, and advocacy.

Inclusive and Participatory Leadership

A key outcome of this initiative was the establishment of community watch groups, designed to ensure grassroots involvement in environmental oversight and policy dialogue. Each committee was formed with deliberate inclusivity, guaranteeing at least 20% representation by women and youth. This milestone reflects FPZS’s commitment to ensuring that those most affected by extractive activities especially women and young people, have a meaningful voice in decisions that impact their environment and livelihoods.

Ongoing Mentorship and Support

The formation of these committees marks just the beginning. FPZS is committed to providing continuous support and mentorship to committee members to enhance their participation, confidence, and effectiveness. By fostering local leadership and collective action, these watch groups are expected to play a crucial role in:

  • Monitoring environmental impacts
  • Engaging policymakers and duty bearers
  • Promoting transparency and accountability in natural resource management
  • Raising awareness within their communities

Building Sustainable Change from the Ground Up

This initiative represents a powerful example of how community-driven approaches can strengthen governance and accountability in the extractive sector. By empowering local voices and promoting participatory leadership, FPZS, with its partners, is helping to build a future where natural resources are managed equitably, sustainably, and in the best interest of communities.
